In Italy there is a fantastic reality which started to grow slowly some years ago, thanks to the consciousness raising of the citizens of small municipalities, and which is creeping in the whole peninsula because it offers a cheap and healthy basic food: raw milk.

The event chairperson praised Organic Pastures for its outstanding commitment and devotion to its customers. OPDC was one of ten finalists out of 45 companies that were initially considered and the only food products company to make it to the final round. Ten members of the McAfee family were there to accept the trophy and official declaration documents from the California State Senate, the California State Assembly, and the Mayor of Fresno commending their outstanding service to their community.
Darlene McAfee Blackwood, mother of OPDC co-founder Mark McAfee remarked, “I am so proud of my sons and grandchildren for all they have done in the last 8.5 years to create, develop, and sustain production and distribution of their unique products. The family management team has prevailed against local, state, and federal inspectors and regulations due to their own tremendous efforts and the help of elected officials, loyal supporters, a new organization for consumers (CREMA), and the national Farm-To-Consumer Legal Defense team. The business has grown to serve over 40,000 customers through a network of farmer’s markets, coops, and big retailers such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats in SoCal.“
Guest speakers included Victoria Bloch of the Weston Price Foundation on why farmer’s markets and whole foods are even more important now in the current economic climate, Jack Bezian of Bezian Bakery on probiotics and the many ways people have been misinformed about health and nutrition, and Mark McAfee of Organic Pastures speaking about SB201 fallout and the current state of raw dairy in California. Our very own Christine Chessen made a surprise appearance and shared how the state legislature was informed and positively influenced during the SB201 voting process through the strong grassroots organizing initiated by CReMA. She also announced the birth of the new CReMA website. The event was organized and hosted by Maurice Kaehler.
Maurice’s raw ice cream was the culinary hit of the event along with homemade cheeses, Jack Bezian’s sourdough breads and plenty of Organic Pastures Milk, chocolate milk, cream, butter and kombucha. A successful silent auction was held with donations of services, art, yoga classes, and gift certificates for OPDC grass-fed/finsihed meats, raw almonds and dairy and Bezian sourdough breads that brought in needed funds that will assist in CReMA’s gradual expansion.
